Carol's Artist Statement

I shoot whatever catches my eye. Color and design are what attract me the most, which is why I am drawn to leaves and architecture. Maple leaves are my favorite because of their endless array of colors and their unique shape. Growing up in Charleston, SC introduced me to intriguing architecture. I enjoy creating a sense of nostalgia by capturing natural light on these forms.

I come from a long line of artistic souls and my "paintbrush" consists of a 35mm Pentax and Fujichrome film (ASA 50.) My subjects provide the "paint" and this slow speed film captures the true colors. Traditional, unaltered photography satisfies the purist in me.

I have studied botany and education, have been photographing since 1982 and have been selling my photography at art festivals since 1999. I have been fortunate to receive honors at many of these shows. These include First Place at the Atlanta Dogwood Festival, and the $3,000 Purchase Award for Permanent Collection at the Bluff Park Art Show. My other professional work has been as a naturalist and educator. I am also a full-time mother to my daughter Jessa!

I print my images to match my original slides. These brilliant, archival photos should last well beyond our lifetimes. My mounting and matting materials are acid-free and archival, museum quality, which means they will not cause the photos to fade or yellow over time. The colors are not enhanced, and I only use natural, available light.
